Sevilla

For centuries, the Andalusian capital Sevilla was the jewel in the Spanish crown, eponymous for Spanish wealth and Spanish culture. Figaro did not work in a provincial backwater - he served what were considered the most refined gentlemen of his time. Seagoing vessels could sail up the Guadalquivir to Sevilla, and here was where the American silver and other riches were landed, until the Guadalquivir became less passable and the port was moved to Cadíz. A more modern cultural contribution of Sevilla is, according to local claims, that tapas were invented here.
