I'd been discussing the advantages and disadvantages of
digital SLR cameras with
Walter
Adler
, one of the owners of
GM-Foto
, a local
photo equipment shop, and I said that I would like to handle a
DSLR under water before buying one myself. Walter mentioned
tthat he would be teaching a course in under water photography
on a one week trip to the Red Sea in Egypt, cameras provided,
for a rather small charge. Well, I wanted to go diving for a
week in fall 2005 anyway, so I decided to join that trip, just
for the opportunity to It turned out that there were only two
students in the course. Walter gave me a Canon EOS 20D, and I
liked that camera quite a lot. In the evening, he would copy
the photos we (the two students and he himself) made, and he
would tell us all the things we did wrong. Also, we could watch
him perform miracles with a few keystrokes in Photoshop.
The boat was from
Diver's
Heaven
, an operator in Egypt who is offering a
bit more up-market service. They are not exactly the cheapest,
but boat, service, dive operations, cabins etc. were all quite
good. I didn't like the food, it was too European for me, I
would have preferred more local or regional cuisine. Otherwise
it was great.
We used Condor to fly from Frankfurt to Marsa Alam, which was a good thing because Condor gives an extra allowance of 30kg for divers. Yes, that's 30kg on top of the 20kg everybody gets, so Walter and I had an allowance of 50kg each. Since Walter had to carry three sets of DSLR equipment, and he had a lot of spare parts, he needed all his allowance and the remainder of mine - we barely made it. The boat is moored in Marsa Alam, so it was only a short bus trip from the airport (which is much preferable to the one in Hurghada) to the boat. The Egyptians are building some kind of tourist village in Marsa Alam, but it isn't finished yet, and there are plenty of resorts and hotels for landlubber tourists in the area.
Anyway, enjoy the pictures. They were all taken with a Canon EOS 20D and the standard 18-55mm kit lens. And some Subtronic strobe, I forgot which. The strobe data doesn't make it into the exif info.
