Granada is one of the most famous places in Andalucía, the last Moorish emirate to be conquered by the Spanish. In reality, the Granada emirate was a very small part of today's Andalucía, and already dependent on Spain, but it was incredibly wealthy and the red fortress (Alhambra, "the Red"), which gave the city its name (meaning "Pomegranate"), was a splendid piece of art. Add to this the scenic backdrop of the Sierra Nevada and you can understand why the Spanish wanted to have this city - and why the Moors did not want to leave
