Cordoba

For more than a millenium, Cordoba on the Guadalquivir river was the most important city in southern Spain. Cordoba was a Roman foundation, provincial capital for southern Spain, and it had been the capital of Moorish Spain and north Africa, even been seat of a caliph for a brief period (during which there were three of them).
We found Cordoba was the most pleasant of the cities we visited. A remnant of the caliphate days is the giant Mezquita, a former mosque turned cathedral, one of the most famous buildings of Spain. The first in Spain's Unesco world heritage site series of 2 Euro coins features the Cordoba Mezquita
