I had the incredibly good fortune to be sent to booth duty for my company at the 2007 Paris Air Show in Le Bourget. Booth duty at industrial shows normally is not exactly the best fun, but the Paris Air Show is an exception, and if you have to do booth duty, it's probably the best you can get. It is a very exciting show, and it takes place in a very exciting city.
I've never before been in Paris (except on a day trip about 20 years ago with only a couple of hours in the city), so of course I used the opportunity to spend some time in the city for sightseeing. The city itself (the numbered arrondissements, which is the area inside the peripheral motorway) is actually surprisingly small, you could walk across it in perhaps 2-3 hours. It is a very colourful and international place with people from all over the world, and, contrary to common belief, you can get around with speaking English quite easily.
The weekends before and after the show, I spent on my own and I stayed in a little hotel near La Défense, an impressive and quite photogenic area itself. Considering that accomodation is very tight during the Paris Air Show, the hotel was actually quite reasonably priced, except for the breakfast which always seems to be a rip-off in France. Also, La Défense is still "city" in the Metro network (though not on the commuter trains), so commuting is not only fast and easy but also cheap.
