Near Uluru, Kata Tjuta ("The Olgas") is another famous sight in central Australia. It is a collection of rounded hills (Kata Tjuta means "many heads") and is believed to have been eroded from a rock like Uluru, but much bigger. It's about 40km from Uluru and the paved road from Alice Springs ends here - after Kata Tjuta, you need a special permit to continue westwards. And a special vehicle. From here, the road leads to Warrakurna and Warburton, to the Gunbarrel Highway - you're entering Diesel And Dust country
