The oldest and biggest city in Australia is a lifely metropolis with plenty of famous sights and beautiful spots. The most famous two are the foolscap shaped opera house and the coathanger shaped harbour bridge, separated by Circular Quay, a rectangular quay in Sydney cove, home of the downtown ferry terminals. This area is the site of the original penal colony.
The colony site was chosen because of the splendid natural harbour, and because, other than Botany Bay to the south of the city center, it was easily accessible in all seasons. Or at least in the season in which the first fleet arrived. For a penal colony, Sydney harbour had an additional bonus: it was so shark-infested that you could place your least desired colony inmates on islands in the harbour with no risk of them swimming away (or at least, no risk of them arriving anywhere if they try). Swimming is much safer nowadays: the city has plenty of beaches everywhere around the harbour
