Waterberg is a famous plateau mountain in the Omaheke, the northern Kalahari. The Omaheke is the homeland of the Herero people, and at Waterberg, the Waterberg battle was fought between the Herero and the German colonial forces. The Herero lost, and one of the first genocides in modern history followed.

Herero are cattle herders, and most of the Omaheke is flat - good for cattle herding - but onto the Waterberg of course not many cows like to walk. So the Waterberg itself is a kind of nature reserve. The plateau is one of the last habitats for black rhino in Namibia. We didn't spot any (only white ones), though

The lodge was halfway up the mountain, and the chalets were built into the Waterberg flank. Each chalet had it's private little pool
