Swakopmund is a pleasant small town (small by world standards - a major city in Namibia). It is a popular holiday and retirement location for wealthy Namibians and has a relaxed and tidy atmosphere. Since it is popular with Namibians of German descent, there are good rolls and good bread available, and local cuisine offers typical German dishes based on African ingredients, e.g. Kudu Sauerbraten

One of the best things to do in Namibia is to take the "Living Desert Tour". This is a Jeep tour through the bed of the Swakop (which is dry most of the year) into the nearby desert. The coastal desert is unique in so far as it gets a lot of moisture from morning mist moving in from the sea. The tour is unique as well - besides from seeing animals that you would normally not be able to spot yourselves, it is also very entertaining
