Ħal Tarxien is a small town in the Valletta metropolitan area, slightly south of the harbour. The town goes back to the Phoenicians, but the area had been settled before: its most famous feature are the Tarxien temples in the centre of the town, one of the megalithic temple compounds on Malta. Unusually, the largest temple here has seven rooms, extending the typical maple leaf pattern by an extra pair of rooms.
Within walking distance of the temples, but outside of Tarxien, is the famous Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum, which is actually disappointing (and it is not allowed to photograph inside the hypogeum)
