The Montmartre - the mount of martyrs - is an area around a hill to the north of the old city centre. Because of the elevated location it is more exposed to wind and therefore millers erected their windmills there. Some of the old windmills are still there, the most famous of them being the red one.
Montmartre also houses an elaborate 19th century basilica, the Sacré Cœur basilica right on top of the hill. There are some nice views over the city from there.
