Cincinnati, Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus
This is the man for whom Cincinnati was (indirectly) named ... roman dictator Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus. In roman times, "dictator" was an elected war time leader. Cincinnatus refused to run for a second term, even though the people wanted him, because the war was over ... I think he was what the American Founding Fathers thought should be a role model for a political leader. Like George Washington and other presidents of his generation, Cincinnatus was a farmer. He is handing back the symbol of dictatorship: a hatchet wrapped in a bundle of sticks called the "fasces" ... the modern word "fascist" goes back to this: a fascist is a leader who likes to keep the bundle.
